Religious yoga

M Ratan

Sir — This refers to some Muslim leaders’ opposition to yoga. One can trust Islamic fundamentalists like Mr Asaduddin Owaisi, the head of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and a Member of Parliamen, to pounce on something as innocuous as yoga and condemn it anti-Islamic.

Mr Owaisi and his lot have especially objected to one asana, Surya Namaskar. Those who are familiar with this asana know that it does not involve any kind of worship of the Sun god, as the Muslim leaders and politicians are now suggesting.

Just like all the other asanas, Surya Namaskar is just a regular exercise that ensures physical fitness and well being. It is ridiculous to see any hidden religious meaning behind yoga.
