Racial paradox

Anoop Hosmath

Sir — India is a land of contradictions. On the one hand, we have Indian cricket fans who have embraced Black cricketers just as Indian football has for long hosted players from Africa.

Yet, on the other hand, African nationals have been attacked, sometimes fatally so, in Bangalore, Pune, and most recently Delhi. They face the worst kind of racial abuse. The Government only steps in when matters go out of hand.

This dichotomy is fascinating, and seen at the other end of the racial spectrum as well. For example, the general preference for fair skin and deference to White people is sometimes replaced by a distaste, if not hatred, for ‘White teams’ such the Australian cricket team. Perhaps, sociologists can explain this strange paradox.
