Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Citizenship rights” (August 1). Instead of clearing the air on who is a citizen of Assam, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) released on Monday has cast more doubts.
Many questions arise: What will happen to those people who will be branded illegalij What next if their final appeal is turned downij Will they be sent to a detention campij Or will they be deportedij There can be no easy answers to these questions.
Even if the Government plans to grant ‘long-term working visas’ to those left out, gaps will remain.
The moot question, however, for the citizens in Assam will be: Who am Iij Should we then believe that the question will remain unansweredij
