Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Challenge for lawmakers” (January 13). The Madras High Court had observed that barbaric crimes should definitely attract barbaric models of punishment, and recommended castration for child abusers. It is unfortunate that child rapes have been on the rise in India. This is because people do not fear the law or the quantum of punishment. It is the duty of the Government to ensure that every citizen respects the law and that the most stringent punishment is given to those who violate laws.
