Sir — Kathmandu has been a city that is most vulnerable to earthquakes. It has had a long history of major quakes. The last big one was in 1934. This meant that a large amount of tectonic energy was lying stored beneath the city, which exploded last weekend. In recent times, Kathmandu has been dotted with poorly built, rickety residential areas. It was ill-prepared to handle earthquakes.
The task now before the Nepalese Government is to bring relief to the families of people who have been devastated by the tragedy. The world community, including India, has already pledged itself to the task of helping Nepal.
