President's intervention is wise and necessary

MC Joshi

This refers to the news report “Prez raps noisy opp, but against ordinance route (January 20). President Pranab Mukherjee's note of caution to the Government against adopting ordinance route as well as to the Opposition for disrupting the Parliament and gagging the voice of the majority in spite of being a minority force, is laudable. He had been a veteran Congress leader but after taking over as President, acted as an impartial statesman, raising questions on many actions of the UPA Government. In a parliamentary democracy, unless there is an emergency warranting a legal provision which cannot wait for the Parliament session, taking the ordinance route is improper.

Sadly, in our case, the Opposition is more interested in disrupting the business of the Parliament, instead of facilitating the mandated business of policy-making. The President has rightly said that when Parliament fails in discharging its law-making role, or enacts laws without discussion, it breaches the trust reposed in it by the people.
