Letter to the Editor

Positive development

Isha Shah

This refers to the editorial, “The people’s ambassador” (April 29). The appointment of Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador for the Indian Olympic Association should be a win-win situation for all. The unnecessary hoopla in the media surrounding this announcement points to the trivial nature of public debate in India.

Notwithstanding the fact that Khan has court cases filed against him, the goodwill and tremendous fan following enjoyed by the star can be put to good use for the promotion of sports, other than cricket, which should not hurt anyone.

Moreover, Khan has been roped in precisely to grab eyeballs for the mega event, which will benefit Indian sports itself. Thus, instead of criticising the IOA, or degrading Khan as an individual, the focus should be on the success of the Indian contingent, which is everyone’s aim, after all.
