This refers to the report, “Rahul Gandhi's wish, Cabinet's command” (January 31). In September 2012, the second wave of reforms was implemented with ‘animal spirit' to rein in the fiscal deficit and impress the rating agencies. The capping of subsidised lPG cylinders was one among them, implemented against the wishes of the opposition parties, since it was considered as prudent. As such, there was no reason to roll back the decision.
The Congress had won in three States — Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka — after the decision to cap the subsidised cylinders. Wherever there has been good governance, the Governments have been voted back to power. As the lok Sabha election nears, a desperate Congress may even roll back diesel prices. The economist-turned-Prime Minister should realise that when he took over in 2004, the economy was on a sound footing. His Government is only harming the economy by rolling back its earlier decisions merely because a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family wants it.
