Poor options

Mahesh Kumar

Sir — Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has new ideas to attract the voters. He has raised two important national issues affecting security: That of China’s intrusion and the illegal influx of Bangladeshis into India. On the other hand, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has nothing new to offer. Although he is young, his ideas and speeches do not reflect the aspirations of the modern generation.

Mr Gandhi claims so much about development that the Congress has brought in the country, but that is a farce. The country’s economy is in a terrible shape and the development he talks of has not reached the people who need it. That is primarily because of the corruption that has been rampant in the Congress-led UPA Government. What are the choicesIJ Mr Arvind Kejriwal needs time, experience and political maturity. On the other hand, the so-called Third Front just cannot make its presence felt.

The BJP is, thus, sitting pretty. The only way the Congress can salvage some of its image is to deny tickets to candidates that have a criminal and corrupt background. But then we have reports that Mr Suresh Kalmadi and Mr Ashok Chavan are going to be rehabilitated.
