Political unanimity is needed to fight terror

MC Joshi

This refers to the report, “India’s blood boils” (September 19). The fidayeen attack by terrorists on an Army camp in Uri, killing 17 soldiers, has enraged the nation. Retired Army personnel, defence experts, media, people in general and also leaders have justifiably criticised India’s Pakistan policy and have asked for retaliatory action against cross-border terrorism.

Jammu & Kashmir became a part of India after the then ruler of the State, Maharaja Hari Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession. On February 22, 1994, the Indian Parliament reiterated it by unanimously adopting a resolution which declared Jammu & Kashmir an integral part of India and demanded Pakistan  vacate areas of the State which it had occupied through aggression.

Parties should not make it just another point to attack the Government without elaborating on what the Government must do. Since military option has serious consequences, it needs political unanimity. There should be a special session of Parliament to discuss the issue and decide a line of action.
