Pilgrimage turned into carnage in Amarnath

Kunal Cheulkar

This refers to the editorial, “Iron will and iron hand” (July 12). Pilgrims returning after paying homage at the Amarnath shrine were attacked by terrorists. This pilgrimage is annually on the radar of the terrorists. Hence, the slightest carelessness on the part of the pilgrims and security forces is taken advantage of, by the terrorists. That the bus was carrying unregistered pilgrims disobeying the rule of the ban on traveling on that highway after seven in the evening, resulted in endangering the lives of the pilgrims.

The reasons for this need not be explained. Why are unregistered vehicles allowed to plyIJ This incident has shown how dangerous it is to overlook even the smallest of guidelines in sensitive areas like Kashmir. It is the duty of the pilgrims to follow the rules and help the security forces. It is totally inappropriate to ignore the rules, especially, when going in a troubled area. The pilgrims will be able to visit the famous shrines in our country without the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads, only after Pakistan’s terror sponsorship is under control. The present incident tells us that, till that time comes, the pilgrims will continue to be targeted in spite of the cordon of security forces thrown around them.
