Petrol theft

Arpita Pathak

Sir — It has come to the light that theft of petrol is happening by installing a microchip, in many petrol pumps. We have been hearing this repeatedly for the past two months. Yet, we do not see any step taken anywhere in the country to tackle the problem. Not destroying the centres of these thieves is akin to giving them encouragement. Is this not injustice to the customersIJ

Immediate action and penalty to the tune of their shortfall plus interest should be imposed on petrol pumps which have been fleecing the customers and cheating the Government. Only then the message will go around that this will not be tolerated. Sealing errant petrol pump will be of inconvenience to the people.

Hence, other solution should be looked for and implemented. Petrol pumps which have been indulging in these illegal activities should be asked to give petrol to their customers at a cheaper rate for a few days or make up for the theft by giving them the amount of petrol that they had been losing on to. These could be ways in which they can be effectively penalised.
