Personal laws in secular India can't be supreme

M Ratan

This refers to the editorial, “Towards one civil code” (February 21). You have rightly commended the Supreme Court for its verdict allowing Muslim families to legally adopt a child, superseding the All India Muslim Personal law Board's restriction.

The apex court has validly pronounced that secular laws of the country have mandatory supremacy over personal laws of a community. One hopes that enlightened voices in the Muslim community will accept the decision gracefully, in the larger interest of the community's welfare. After all, personal laws cannot be allowed to come in the way of laws of a secular country.

The verdict is an important step towards enhancing social equality within the minority community, in this modern day and age. Finally, it has to be remembered that it was a social activist, Ms Shabnam Hashmi, who had the vision to petition the court to extend legal rights to Muslims families to adopt a child.
