Performance time

J Akshobhya

Sir — As the first anniversary of the Modi Government approaches, one can expect a plethora of comments. Politicians will approve or disapprove its performance, depending on their distance from power. One year is not enough time to deliver a verdict on the performance of any Government. This, therefore, cannot be the right time to evaluate the Narendra Modi regime. Even those rushing to fail him should suspend their judgement for a couple of years. Rome was not built in a day. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who gives the Modi Government “zero out of 10”, ought to at least know this much about Rome.

But the fact also is that the common man, who was happy to see the back of the decade-long Congress-led UPA Government, last May, is irritated with the BJP-led NDA Government, this May. The land acquisition Ordinance was an unforced error. In the next four years, the challenge for the Modi Government is to produce tangible gains for the people. More jobs in the service, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors, expansion of social welfare, and much more. These are still achievable targets. Mr Modi can do it because he has the requisite energy and determination.
