Peace in Afghanistan appears to be a distant dream

Nimai Charan Swain

This refers to the article, “lasting solution to Afghan crisis” (July 11) by JK Verma. Viewed from the state of affairs in Afghanistan, it has well been predicted that peace and stability in the war-torn state is now a remote expectation. It also appears that Ashraf Ghani, the President of Afghanistan, has been unable to contain Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

It has long been held that Pakistan is involved in imparting terror training and providing sophisticated arms and ammunition to militants to unleash unrest in Afghanistan yet it continues with its dubious ways. This is just a proxy war on the part of Pakistan which has a striking similarity with the happenings in Kashmir.

The International community is well aware about the overt and covert involvement of Pakistan in acts of terror and several nations have also condemned deadly attacks over there. Yet, Pakistan has failed to mend ways.

Undoubtedly, India has strategic interest  in Afghanistan but it is not militarily so dominant or economically so sound to extend help and cooperation to the beleaguered state.

Only willing cooperation of all nations across the world, including China, Russia and India can possibly end the crisis in Afghanistan and neutralise Pakistan. But it seems downright impossible .
