Sir — This refers to the editorial “Blot on India’s history” (January 20). It is pathetic that even 25 years after Kashmiri Pandits were forced out of their homes, few steps have been taken to mitigate their loss. Successive Union and State Governments are responsible for this. It is the fundamental responsibility of the Government to protect and preserve the right to life, liberty and property of every individual of the country, including the citizens of Jammu & Kashmir.
When the Pandits were forced into exile, Mr Farooq Abdullah’s Government in the State did precious little to curb the extremist elements. It was too frightened to take appropriate steps against the separatists. It is a fact that the callous attitude of previous Governments has led to the harassment and humiliation of the Pandits, who were the ancient inhabitants of the valley. It is hoped that the Modi Government will take a fair decision to rehabilitate the displaced and distressed Pandits who have been refugees in their own country.
