Pardon unjustified

A Gajanana

Sir — The eminent persons who are seeking pardon for film star Sanjay Dutt say that he is not a Tada convict, that he procured arms for self-defence and that he has already spent 18 months in jail. But, the Supreme Court has already taken these aspects into consideration in giving its verdict. The real reason for the clamour by his new-found fans is Dutt’s celebrity status and Bollywood’s business interest. But Dutt has sensibly decided to undergo punishment. Perhaps, he may get amnesty if he demonstrates good behaviour while in jail.

Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju now wants another convict, Zaibunnisa, to be pardoned also, as she is old and suffering from health problems.

This is an after-thought.
