One conversion can't be better than the other

Manoj Parashar

This refers to the article, “The sordid politics of religious conversions” (December 17) by Rajesh Singh. A major controversy over the conversion of hundreds of Muslims to Hinduism by a saffron organisation in Agra has yet again ignited a debate on religious conversions. The case has been deliberately blown out of proportion by a section of the media and so-called secular political parties, only to target the Modi Government. Conversion and re-conversions are nothing new in India, but the secular political class and the media have selectively kept mum on the conversion of the lower strata of Hindu society by Christian missionaries over the years.

Their duplicity is exposed by the fact that the sentencing of seven Christians for the murder of Swami lakshmanananda Saraswati in 2008 did not become big news for them. Christian missionaries are responsible for bringing drastic demographic changes in the North-East, central India and eastern States like Jharkhand and Odisha.
