Old rivalry drives Sonia tirade against Swaraj

M Ratan

The current hostility between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on display during the Congress's repeated stalling of Parliament's functioning, goes back to the time when the latter was being talked of as a candidate for the Prime Minister's office, and Ms Swaraj had strongly protested against a foreign-born person becoming the country's Prime Minister. The bitterness against Ms Swaraj has persisted, although there had been signs of a thaw later on, when the two met and spoke warmly with each other on occasions.

No wonder, therefore, that on the flimsy pretext of the External Affairs Minister ‘helping a fugitive', lalit Modi, Ms Gandhi has assumed a morally and legally unsound stand of demanding Ms Swaraj's resignation. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has gone berserk, accusing the Minister of criminality. He is acting like a prosecutor, judge and jury combined, with his defamatory charge. He has not supplied any material to substantiate his irresponsible allegation.
