Not sacrosanct

KV Seetharamaiah

Sir — The Union Government has rightly chosen to give marching orders to Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav for his involvement in a high-profile recruitment scam. It is unfortunate that the post of Governor is being filled by persons usually defeated in elections but known to favour the Centre. The high office has now ceased to be truly sacrosanct.

The Governor’s role assumes importance when there is a constitutional breakdown. A Governor should be impartial in submitting reports on situations prevailing in the State in times of political crises. But with party loyalists occupying the post, it is futile to expect impartiality from the Governor’s office.
