No to vote-bank politics, yes to growth agenda

Manu Taneja

This refers to the editorial, “Indeed, nation is supreme” (March 12). The ruling Congress and some other political parties are known to appease certain communities in the name of ‘secularism'. They do this largely to conceal their incompetence and corrupt credentials. For the last many decades, these parties have only pursued vote-bank politics. They have nurtured, and one may add, fooled, their vote banks, by merely indulging in lip-service to the latter’s concerns. Had the Congress seriously pursued the agenda of development, there would have been no need for sops to garner votes.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, has steadfastly refused to follow the populist agenda and focussed instead on development — the fruits of which have been available to all, without prejudice to any community or caste. And this is reflected in the support he has gained from all sections of society.

It will be better for the country if all political parties understand this principle and start aligning themselves with development instead of petty politics centered on appeasement and vote-bank.
