Net neutrality is must for Digital India success

AS Bedi

After going through the recommendations of the Department of Telecommunications report on Net neutrality, one finds that the report contradicts its own objective of ‘maintaining the core principles of Net neutrality'. On the one hand, it encourages the growth of over-the-top messaging apps. On the other, it talks about bringing the Internet-based calling apps under a regulatory framework. Reports show that a continuous rise in revenue of service providers from data charges has been sufficient for the deployment of new infrastructure.

The ball is now in the Government's court. Already hurt by the charge of crony capitalism, it is now up to the Narendra Modi regime to not tamper with its core policy of Net neutrality (as reiterated by Union Minister for Telecommunications Ravi Shankar Prasad) and work towards establishing a neutral and free Internet regime. This will go a long way in achieving the Government's goal of Digital India.
