Net connectivity

Mahesh Kumar

Sir — The Prime Minister’s ambitious scheme of Digital India will succeed if at least two things happen: Internet access is enhanced manifold and the speed of Internet goes up substantially.

The Net speed of most providers is slow unless one opts for higher tariff plans. A minimum speed of two mbps must be offered by service providers under all plans. As of now, many people refrain from taking Net connections because of the prohibitive costs attached to high-speed tarrif plans.

In schools and colleges, especially those located in small towns and villages, free Internet connectivity is vital, along with, it goes without saying, reliable power supply.

Public sector enterprises such as Mahanagar Telephone Nigam limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam limited must provide hi-speed connections and hassle-free services at nominal charges in these areas.

Private service providers must bring down their costs to make the service affordable to the masses. They should remember that larger volumes result in more profits, as the fixed cost remains the same.
