Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Getting bad to worse” (December 15). Infuriated by the arrest of State Transport Minister Madan Mitra in the Saradha scam, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the arrest as undemocratic and illegal, and an act of political vendetta. She called it a conspiracy to destroy democracy in the country.
It is on the order of the Supreme Court that the Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, wherein thousands of small investors in West Bengal were robbed of their life’s savings.
Prior to Mitra, Trinamool MPs Kunal Ghosh and Srinjoy Bose and former Director General of Police Rajat Majumdar were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation. It is the Chief Minister’s obligation to maintain the rule of law.
