Need of hour is to revamp criminal justice system

Pdmalaviya

This refers to the article, “IPS is well past its expiry date” (June 13) by Deepak Sinha. The author’s assumption that only the police system is responsible for poor control over crime and criminals is misplaced. Control is possible only when the entire criminal justice system functions harmoniously and effectively.

For example, if a rich brat assaults a police on duty, what should the officer doIJ The police cannot catch him or thrash him but only arrest him and make him appear in court. But the offender will be out on bail before his case reaches the court. And by that time, all independent witnesses turn hostile, resulting in acquittal.

While it is correct that the IPS has to re-invent itself to perform the functions it is meant for, the public must wake up to what goes on in the system and what vested interests have been created. The need of the hour is to create pressure, to revamp the criminal justice system as a whole. Crying for police reforms alone will not get us anywhere.
