Moral considerations no longer relevant

VN Ramachandran

This refers to the article, “Only wealth matters, virtue is scoffed at” (April 9) by Hiranmay Karlekar. The writer's disillusionment with the decadence of our moral values, rampant in every department of life, is understandable. The golden days of high moral standards and lofty character norms seem to be disappearing into thin air in this materialistic world, even as the religious leaders, who always kept themselves aloof from mercenary matters and were looked on by people as the guides of humanity, are seen participating in partisan politics and even endorsing one party or the other.

When the arbiters of ‘right' and ‘wrong' no longer care even a little for the upholding of moral values, it is futile to blame the bureaucrats and the politicians and the businessmen and the NGOs for throwing moral caution to the winds. The shocking police apathy seen in the recent Delhi road rage incident is the tip of an iceberg of moral turpitude.
