Modi's diplomacy

MC Joshi

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “India’s NSG membership” (June 27) and the report, “NSG to discuss ways to let India in by Dec” (June 27). It is a pity that leaders like Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief lalu Prasad, whose understanding of international diplomacy and complexities of global politics is quite questionable, were putting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the dock for his hectic diplomatic efforts for India’s membership of the prestigious Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). But they did not utter a word of disapproval for China’s mischief in blocking India’s entry into NSG.

In a latest development on NSG front, an unusual decision has been taken on the suggestion of Mexico that another meeting of NSG should be held before the end of this year to consider the membership of the group to non-NPT signatories like India. Mexico’s suggestion was opposed by China, but supported by a large number of countries, including the US.

A committee headed by Argentine Ambassador Rafael Grossi has been set up for informal consultations on India’s membership and an Obama administration official has said that India would be a full member of the (NSG) regime by the end of the year. It is the success of Modi’s diplomacy.
