Modi's consensus politics, sign of a mature leader

Bal Govind

This refers to the editorial, “The thaw in a tea cup” (November 30). After the BJP’s defeat in Bihar, it was obvious that the Opposition would attack more aggressively. The first day of Parliament’s Winter Session started with a confrontationist approach. In light of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts are praiseworthy. Mr Modi spoke favourably about  past Prime Ministers of the country and also reached out to opposition parties for their views and consent on the Goods and Services Tax Bill.

Mr Modi's statement of consensus politics is a sign of a mature and pragmatic Prime Minister. He knows that patience of the corporate sector is running out and India cannot afford to wash out another Parliament session. Many critical Bills are waiting to see the light of the day. It was also heartening to see that the Congress said that nothing was carved in stone as far as the GST Bill was concerned, especially when fixing the rates. Hence, we can hope for a calmer and fruitful Winter Session, with clear results to show.
