Misplaced sympathy

NK Das Gupta

Sir — It seems that Indians are uncomfortable with judicial pronouncements of denial of bail to celebrities or their sentencing after conviction. A case in point is the recent sentencing of  Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt in a case of illegal possession of arms, and the fervent calls for remission of his five-year jail sentence.

The actor’s supporters seem to forget that not only was he in possession of an AK56 rifle, a pistol and some grenades, which he received from some of the accused in the 1993 Mumbai blast incident, but that he was also purportedly in constant touch with the masterminds of the attack, notably the D-company.
