Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Amend the juvenile law” (April 10). It is a travesty of justice that one of the six, and the most brutal, perpetrators of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, was tried by the juvenile court and sentenced to a confinement for a period of three years, the maximum punishment under the juvenile justice law, because he was short of the prescribed age of 18 years on the day of committing the crime.
The Supreme Court has rightly ask the Centre to review the juvenile justice Act and make it more stringent in cases of heinous crimes, as a message had to be sent that the victim’s life was equally important. If those under the age of 18 years can commit heinous crimes without being punished, there must be tried under the Indian Penal Code.
