Sir — This refers to the article, “Section 377 will not be repealed any time soon” (December 31) by Sandhya Jain. I fail to understand whether the columnist truly wants to root out paedophilia or just use it as an argument for promoting the Western concept of homophobia; yes, I hope it’s clear by now what is exactly a Western import into our inclusive Indian culture.
The 2009 verdict, which many of us like so much, decriminalised ‘consensual’ sexual acts between adults. So, I do not see how the 2009 Delhi High Court verdict failed to maintain criminality of paedophilia. And speaking of legal restrictions to protect kids, wouldn’t it be much better to have specific laws to protect child rights than depend on vague laws like Section 377IJ
The columnist is clearly unaware that there are several instances of rape and other forms of exploitation (both sexual and non-sexual) of underage girls by heterosexual males. How does she plan to protect them by using this draconian sectionIJ
