Mess that our education system has become

Sandeep K Singh

This refers to the article, “little lives being snuffed out” (April 2) by JS Rajput. The writer has effectively brought out a bitter truth in the country's education system, especially at the school level.

We have all known how shoddily the system works and how students and parents who cannot afford to ‘pay' are penalised. That students have to commit suicide because of the pressure of being not just unable to pay fees but also of being unable to ‘pay’ for copying, is indeed distressing.

Is this the education system that we must haveIJ A poor man cannot pay high fees at education shops run by businessmen-educationists. Education has become a lucrative business. A recently survey on roadside beggars in Gurgaon showed that 6,000 children between the age group of six and 14 years are begging instead of going to school. Many of them are girls. One hopes that the new Government which comes at the Centre addresses this grim reality.
