Mere lip service

Madhu Agrawal

Sir — The formality or the farce of celebrating International Women’s Day is fulfilled every year on March 8, but without any change in the attitude or mindset of people towards women who get only a miniscule representation in the law-making process.

In India, political parties rally for reservation on grounds of religion and caste, evidently to strengthen their vote-banks, but oppose reservation in Parliament for women. WhyIJ At a time when the quota for women in panchayats and local bodies is being increased to 50 per cent from the earlier 33 per cent, it is meaningless to resist the proposal of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament.
