Meeting challenges

Dhruv Bhardwaj

Sir — This refers to the article, “In Naypyidaw, democracy dawns” (February 8) by Mayuri Mukherjee. It is good to see that Myanmar has taken one of its most definitive steps, but the road to transition from military rule to a civilian democracy is fraught with challenges, ranging from keeping interests of the Rohingya Muslim minority to accommodating the powerful military in loop to striking a balance between re-engagement with the West and dealing with China at the same time.

It is also an opportune time for India to not only pursue its regional economic interests such as the  Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar corridor, Kaladan project etc, but also to ensure an active institutional and diplomatic support to make sure that the nascent democratic values find its feet in Myanmar.
