This is with reference to the report, “18 months, 180 meetings, O result; cost Rs22l!” (November 3). This shameful episode must be investigated in detail. Since the last more than 60 years, during the Congress rule, we have seen numerous appointments of commissions and committees whose chief aim was to give re-employment to the Government's favourites. Many reports were wanting for action after a lapse of a long period. In several cases, the heads of these panels got frequent extensions till they lived.
This has of late mainly happened in Uttar Pradesh, where every communal riot led to the creation of some committee or commission of administrative or judicial type, involving wasteful expenditure to satisfy the affected parties for the time being. The exercise was forgotten after a lapse of time, thus giving the panel heads time to enjoy the perks of office after retirement, and with no accountability. Unfortunately, public memory is short.
