lost business

Bal Govind

Sir — This refers to the article, “lessons from Singur and Sanand” (May 2) Jitendra K Das. It is an open secret that Singur’s loss was Sanand’s gain. Undoubtedly, the movement of Tata’s Nano plant from Singur to Sanand in Gujarat has changed the fortunes of hundreds of farmers and labourers. It has changed the landscape of this entire city. As many as 400 companies have set up business there. This tells us a lot about the approach of the Gujarat Government, for it has been easy for companies to establish business.

On the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who prevented the setting up of the Tata Nano plant in her State, has eventually realised the great loss. She called for an investors’ summit in Kolkata to get things back on track. Unfortunately, the Singur saga has left a bitter taste for corporates, who now shy from investing in West Bengal.
