Sir — This refers to the article, “Strengthen first line of defence: The police” (September 23) by Joginder Singh. The writer has analysed the numerical strength of the police and the deficiencies in training, in the light of the recent Muzaffarnagar riots.
In Uttar Pradesh, the police and the bureaucracy are divided on political and caste lines. Recently, a leading paper even published the names of IAS and IPS officers who are allegedly supporters of the two main political parties in the State, and how they get plum postings when the power structure changes.
In Muzaffarnagar too, the insidious role played by police officers at the behest of their political masters has spilled out into the open. There is little that needs to be said.
