liquor ban welcome, will save many lives

Azhar A Khan

This refers to the news report, “Nitish shocks Bihar with booze ban on April 1” (November 27). It augurs well that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has started his third tenure by delivering on one of his main election promises that his State will go dry from April 1, 2016.

liquor is the mother of myriad social ills, and this is evident from the fact that consumption of spurious country liquor often leads to the death of innocent people. liquor not only harms an individual but has an adverse impact on his entire family.

The liquor ban in Bihar is going to have a negative impact on the Government's exchequer but it will also end a number of social ills stemming from liquor consumption. It is the common man that bears the brunt of this deadly drinking habit. The loss to the exchequer can be adjusted but the loss of lives is irretrievable. Mr Nitish Kumar's decision merits praise and warm welcome from all quarters.
