lessons ignored

Sravana Ramachandran
Sir — It is shocking to learn that over 100 persons have been killed in a stampede on Sunday on a bridge over the Sindh river, leading to a temple at Ratangarh in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh, where lakhs of devotees had congregated for the Navratri festival.
The State Government should have taken necessary precautionary measures at the place when  people in large numbers gather for the festival. What is more distressing is that the place had witnessed a similar mishap in 2006, when 50 pilgrims were washed away. It is highly deplorable that we have not learned lessons from the earlier disaster and continue to err.
