learn from Cape Town

Prakash Dixit

Sir —This refers to the article, “Waterless in Cape Town” (February  8) by Hiranmay Karlekar. The picture of Cape Town is really alarming. What is true for Cape Town today is akin to the situation in many parts of India: Over population, repeated droughts and foreboding impacts of climate vagaries.

If we have to prevent Cape Town-like repeat in our country, and avoid new-kind of refugees, for which some countries are already gearing up, then this story is a wake-up call.

It will be wise if we identify vulnerable areas now and take precautionary measures. Assessments should also include judicial apportioning of usage of water for population, industry and agriculture. The scope of proposed Drought Management Commission may also be enlarged to include other impacts of climate change.
