Sir — It is a sad moment in the history of Indian democracy that the Union Cabinet has cleared an ordinance to neutralise a Supreme Court order which mandated immediate disqualification of MPs and members of State legislatures convicted for offences carrying a sentence of two years or more.
The ordinance is a clear case of mockery of justice and democracy. Most politicians have joined hands, claiming that the Supreme Court does not have the power to frame laws and regulate elections.
Are the politicians trying to suggest that convicted legislators and MPs are entitled to participate in the exercise of formulating lawsIJ How can law-breakers make lawsIJ Yet this is what is happening in our country. Our electoral laws are defective and they must be amended.
