lankan wounds

JS Acharya

This refers to the report by the United Nations Human Rights Council on alleged war crimes in Sri lanka. The UN report has re-established the fact that sub-human atrocities were committed during the civil war, but it has also noted that actions of the rebels and those of the Sri lankan authorities were equally reprehensible.

This report is going to re-open old wounds and test a nation that is trying to move past, decades of unrest and divide. But if the conflict was long-drawn, healing will not happen overnight. The Sri lankan Tamils insist on nothing short of an international probe to get justice.

Unfortunately, such sentiments are backed by India’s Tamil politicians, whose ire formed the backdrop to Sri lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s recent visit to India. No matter how significant is their support at the Centre, the Modi Government should not allow them to dictate India’s foreign policy.
