Justice delayed

NR Ramachandran

Sir — Since there is no place for arson and violence in a democracy, the Dimapur incidence is to be condemned. But who is responsible for the lawlessness of the crowd leading to arson and riotsIJ  It is our slow justice delivery system. Rapists roam freely on bail. Taking shelter behind the laws is another form of taking the law into one’s own hands. The conviction rate in our country, not only in cases of rape but also in other crimes, is abysmally low.

Our laws are as of now accused-friendly. Our representatives should craft more exemplary laws, since legal provisions should not have loopholes that the accused can exploit. In addition, senior politicians and other influential people in the social sphere must show greater sensitivity in their words and deeds.
