This refers to the editorial, “A new American order” (January 23). The peaceful transfer of power, “cornerstone of an exemplary democracy”, as former US President Barack Obama termed it, happened on January 20. When Donald Trump assumed office as the 45th President of the US, the peace that western Europe, America’s strongest ally, has known for 70 long years after World War II, might become a thing of past. Diplomacy is clearly not Trump’s forte. He has already rubbed key nations like China, Germany, France and Mexico the wrong way. The exodus of manufacturing jobs to China was Trump’s ticket to presidency.
But it is on Trump’s foreign policy that the world is awaiting a radical shift, with bated breath. His proximity to Russian President Vladimir Putin has already set tongues wagging. Whilst there may be much to question regarding the credentials of the new President, it would be unwise and unfair to judge him this early in his tenure.
