Judging judges

R Kumar

Sir —This refers to the editorial, “Judicial Transparency” (July 24). In the backdrop of the recent sensational revelations made by former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju regarding the appointment of an allegedly corrupt justice of the Madras High Court, the need for appropriate amendments in the process of judicial appointments has become more necessary. That alone, however, may not suffice. The call of the day is to permit a live telecast of the day-to-public hearings in the apex court and the High Courts.

If the Members of Parliament (the country’s lawmakers) are not uncomfortable with the live telecast of proceedings of the august Houses, their lordships should also not object to follow suit. This will ensure transparency.
