This refers to the editorial, “Hail Mediocrity!” (June 25). The four-year undergraduate course was introduced last year by the eminent scholar and Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Professor Dinesh Singh. One batch has already completed a year. This year, there was a pedestrian-like clamour to drop it in favour of the earlier three-year programme. It is shameful for the University Grants Commission to object now when it did not last year. Is it good governance to bow down to extraneous influences to drop an ongoing good courseIJ
Education has become a hand-maiden of politicians and the education mafia who are making hay while the sun shines. Is it fair in the interests of academic autonomy to drop a highly flexible and innovative course of international standard in favour of an outdated and mediocre one, crossing all limits of academic freedom, scholarship and discipline in the campus of an august institution of national fameIJ
