Inspired speech

P Arihanth

Sir — It looks like the moment has come. The born-again Amethi MP displayed the skills of a veteran to deliver a cutting speech on Monday, repeatedly pausing for effect and smiling in relish when his barbs drew blood.

A day after Mr Rahul Gandhi launched a frontal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was interesting to watch him trouble the BJP with his sarcasm-laden jibes during the debate over the agrarian crisis. Speaking only for the third time in Parliament, Mr Gandhi oozed confidence. He taunted the BJP on Mr Modi’s corporate leaning and faulty farm policies and looked on in amusement as the rattled Treasury benches protested.

For a long decade or so, an increasingly despairing Congress had waited for the moment when Mr Gandhi, the parliamentarian, would eventually step out of the incubator. Though the moment has come, the biggest challenge before the party vice president is to energise the Congress and deal with the veterans within, who will not leave their privileged positions.
