Sir —This refers to the report, “Rahul, not ‘inner voice’, stopped Sonia march to 7RCR” (July 31). It was common knowledge even before Mr Natwar Singh’s book came out that there was a huge upsurge of opposition led by Ms Sushma Swaraj to a foreign-born Congress leader occupying the Prime Minister’s office. In any case, the Gandhian ‘inner voice’ did not suit Ms Sonia Gandhi’s style and persona, as we now know.
Ms Gandhi was known to be ambitious, secretive, authoritarian and Machiavellian; she clearly loved power. It is stated that even when Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had shorter terms as the party president, she has had 14 years of uninterrupted rule.
Under her leadership, the Congress has been reduced to a rump in the recent general election — the worst ever defeat it has suffered. But her sycophants still rule the roost, and none dare point fingers at her or her son for the debacle the two led the party to.
