India stands committed to protecting its guests

M Ratan

This refers to the report, “Gr Noida attack xenophobic, racial: African envoys” (April 4). It is disturbing that the heads of African missions in New Delhi have termed the recent attack on Nigerian students in Greater Noida as “xenophobic” and “racialist”. It is reported that this criminal act was triggered by the tragic death of a young Indian student due to the use of drugs allegedly supplied by Nigerians. At any rate, this unacceptable violence against the Nigerians was widely condemned by all sections of Indian people, the Government and the media. Prompt action was taken against the guilty. It was reiterated that all foreigners, particularly our African brethren, living and studying in India, are respectful guests, in tune with our ancient culture.

Hence, with regard to the misbehaviour of some Indians as an expression of “xenophobia” and “racialism”, is not only preposterous, but does no credit to the fair-mindedness of African envoys. If we were such evil people, would such large numbers of Africans  come here to study, work and liveIJ
