Inadequate effort

Madhu Agrawal

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “The feel-great Budget” (February 2). The Union Finance Minister, during his Budget speech for the fiscal year 2017-2018, admitted that India is a non-tax-compliant country where a majority of people, who declare annual income upto Rs 10 lakh, are salary paid. The Budget lacks the provision to make non-salaried persons tax-compliant where such people practically outnumber salaried people.

Cash transaction limit of three lakh rupees is too high at a time when stress is being given for a cashless economy. This limit could be just Rs 50,000 or at the most one lakh rupees.

There should also be cash-holding limit for individuals as desired by the Special Investigation Team on black money. Budget announcements also lack other steps desired to be taken to smoothen cashless transactions of higher amounts of say Rs 10,000 and above. Only such steps can practically make non-salaried people tax-compliant.
